When I go to places I prefer to see the actual city not just the tourist parts so staying with people from there helps, since they can suggest nice places that maybe aren't in tour guides. Also I love meeting people so why not start friendships with 'sleepovers'?
Plus hotels are expensive and as a student, having left over money after a month is rare!
