2011 summer: Things have calmed down a bit in the couchsurfing world, good thing because this was becoming a madhouse. Gearing up for the next season :-)
Had a lousy two years, swine flu which turned into a life-threatening bronchitis, not to mention grad school math, so I'm not up to my usual standard of road trips and wilderness and all-nighters :-( (2011 -- getting better again!)

2012 new year update: well, not so many emergency surfers recently -- everyone we saw was already covered by the Last Minute group, great. We're still up for contacts although life has been complex so it's always as is, where is around here.

Emergency couchsurfers still very welcome to call, just remember it's going to be basic no-frills couch.

We love having you around and we like to share with you.
Futons available, when possible we share meals, and we love to take you along on activities when we can.

I'm an adult but I hang out with roommates and friends less than half my age because they can almost keep up with me.

Due to a few misunderstandings in the past, a few disclaimers needed:

We love to have you here, just recognize you are in our home.
Think that you are visiting your crazy but cool auntie and your cousins, and act accordingly.
This is *not* a hotel; it is a family home.
This is basic couchsurfing. New house has two spare rooms at the moment, one very large and one very small. We get together when we can. Working students, not a constant party place. One bathroom and second toilet for all permanent residents plus guests/surfers -- sharing required, thoughtfulness requested.
WARNING: couchsurfers are welcome. Liars and users are not. If you say you are coming here, then show up. More or less when you say as much as possible. Cop-outs will receive a negative reference, which is taken very seriously in couchsurfing and will limit your future use of the network.

We all have our own lives and multiple activities and expect you to have the same.

Severe allergies and asthma, absolutely non-smoking.

Generally I take allergies as a challenge and experiment with cooking using alternative foods. People generally like my cooking a lot.
Anyone who stays here needs to be conscious of the allergy issue, use no scented products and not add anything to the cooking; absolutely non-smoking; and I hope people I stay with will be clear about these questions.
Usually no problems if you are honest and straightforward;just remember that no means no.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

We keep friends on the futon often, a couple of times a month or more.
We've had a number of couchsurfers, a few dozen by now. Most have been good people, two now dear friends.
Some on the wrong wavelength -- please read the profile above. We love guests and friends, and we aren't interested in being hotel servants to anyone.

I've travelled before and visited, with good and bad and sometimes bizarrely funny results . . . ask for stories if you like.

One thing? How can you choose just one?
On ferry from Victoria to Vancouver BC with young daughter; Hong Kong Morris Dancers staged impromptu concert. (ie British Navy people from Hong Kong wearing dragons on the backs of their shirts, on the ferry in British Columbia rain forested islands, dancing medieval English folk dances originally inspired by the Moors in Spain. How's that for incongruities?)
Ran out of gas and cash, ran old Dodge van down from Jasper Alberta to Saskatchewan, 600 mi or 1000 km, coaxing along, on one tank of gas.
Ski patrolled in Labrador. minus 30 alone on hill at night.
Took train up to Labrador.
Northern Lights on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence in August.
Parked van on beach on north shore, forgot river was tidal, woke up with waves lapping at the tires.
Death Valley in July and Northwest Territories in January the same year (timing is obviously not my forte).
Climbed on top of the dome at MIT in my foolish youth
Discovered I can speak French
Discovered I can do abstract algebra
Nearly everything amazes me

I ran in the last Canadian national election as the official candidate for the Rhinoceros Party. After a well-fought campaign, I was defeated by Marc Garneau -- being a former astronaut gives him an unfair advantage -- but I did come in ahead of the Communist (my 140 votes to his 80).
