One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
During my junior year, I felt a strong urge to see the world. After clarifying what I wanted, I searched purposefully and found a summer work-and-travel program in the U.S. I signed up almost without hesitation that same afternoon.
Once I passed the interview, the real pressure began: final exams were right around the corner, I had to handle all the red tape for leaving campus early, and I was constantly emailing my American employer to finalize pre-departure arrangements. To make things harder, I was also going through a sudden breakup. All the stress built up until one night when I finally broke down in tears.
The challenge continued the day I landed at San Francisco International Airport. While using an ATM to get cash to pay for my checked bag, the airline misplaced my suitcase — and my next flight was leaving in less than three hours. Instead of panicking, I stayed calm. I clearly explained the situation to the staff, asked them to locate it as soon as possible, and left my contact details and address, requesting that the bag be shipped to me if it wasn’t found before my departure. Unfortunately, it never turned up.
Looking back, that was the first time I had ever left my country completely on my own. From actively searching for the opportunity and making quick decisions, to handling every challenge along the way — managing academic and bureaucratic stress, navigating emotional lows, and staying composed in a real-time crisis — each step revealed a level of courage and problem-solving ability I hadn’t known I had. This wasn’t just a trip abroad; it was an intense masterclass in resilience, adaptability, and learning to trust myself when things went wrong. And honestly? I think I handled it all remarkably well!
