About Me

Hello prospective couch owners!

We are a couple currently travelling overland from New Zealand to the UK, open minded and keen to learn about and discover how other people live as we make our way cross-country.
We're usually vegetarian but do eat meat if it means learning about local culture and cuisine.

A bit about Will: Hello, I'm a pretty chill Kiwi (colloquial name for NZers, after our national bird) who grew up doing what a lot of Kiwis do, camping, trekking, cycling, swimming in the ocean. I spend a lot of time reading, cooking (except when travelling), and eating. I went to university in Wellington, NZ where I studied psychology and philosophy. I'm loving traveling, especially meeting new peeps and sampling as many local foods as I can.

A bit about Helen: Hey there. So I'm the one from the UK. Basic stuff - 25 years old, grew up just outside of Birmingham (no Brummy accent though haha), went to uni in Bath, and spent two years working and travelling in NZ (where I obviously met Will). As most travellers tend to be, I'm a very laid back person, but the British in me manifests with the usual politeness and self-deprecation. When I'm not travelling, I play roller derby and when I'm getting paid I enjoy drinking crafty beers. I'm all about good company, new experiences, everything spicy and David Bowie.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Our fondest experiences while traveling have all been spending time with new friends. Couch surfing is a great way to meet new people and learn about their place in the world.

Music, Movies, and Books

Will: I have a pretty wide taste in music from electronic of various flavours, "indie", metal, hip hop, cinematic, classical on and on... I like reading historical fiction, philosophy, non-fiction especially science. Movies I don't really have favorites although I am proud of a lot that have come out of NZ; Boy, Hunt For The Wilder People, What We Do In The Shadows, Eagle vs Shark.

Helen: these aren't necessarily my biggest favourites, just ones that I like that I can think of right now. David Bowie, as mentioned. Bonobo, Lambhorn (my mate's band), Holy Moly and The Crackers (another mate), Goldfrapp, The Message. The Life Aquatic, Brazil, Labyrinth, Trainspotting, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. I've been reading a lot of Simone de Beavouir recently, I like classics but also newer cats like Neil Gaiman and Ian McEwan - I'd like to read some Irvine Welsh too.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Helen: Visited the slums of Africa when I was 11 years old.

Will: Worked on a Kollywood (Chennai's version of Bollywood) film in India as an assistant to a special effects makeup artist.
