Living to learn & learning to live
First thing's first: I was born and raised at my family's small business - a small liquor store on the Jersey Shore. As such, I spent a lot of my childhood in the shop -- pricing bottles, stocking shelves, cleaning the store & clerking customers.
I've always been interested in computers, technology & the internet, but in college I studied English (language, literature & creative writing) and Earth Systems (environmental science). For a while I was enthusiastic about environmental law, but more recently decided that law school & life at a firm isn't for me. I'm still very much a nature person (see interests below), and I can be an activist when the time calls for it.
A few of my favorite quotes:
"Treat everyone you meet like God in drag." - Ram Dass
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." - Wilde
"Be excellent to each other & party on, dudes!!" - Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
Meet new people!
I'm an active student (& certified teacher) of yoga - various practices, but particularly Vinyasa. I also love being outdoors: biking, long motorcycle trips, hiking. I'm definitely a barefoot enthusiast and have been running sans-shoes for almost half a decade. And rock-climbing at the gym.
But I'm certainly not a very dedicated fitness person. If there's ever a choice to go out with friends (new or old) - that's always my preference. :)

Music, Movies, and Books
I'm really into lost generation & beat writers, poetry by Elizabeth Bishop, Sylvia Plath, Jeffers, Whitman & Blake. I've been passing great poetry back and forth via email with some friends and hopefully that will start turning into a forum for sharing our own writings. I wish I had more time to spend with heavier stuff - Eliot/Faulkner - but these days I'm happy to get through the New Yorker on a weekly basis.
I love the music that my friends make: check out The Amboys, Emma Tringali & The Walk-Ins, Midnight Poncho. When I'm working/cooking/chilling I'm more into jazz, bluegrass & folk. And, of course, I'm into festivals & popular (yes, pop) stuff. Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young have been duking it out for top spot for several years.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
So many beautiful people and beautiful parts of the world. In particular, experiences in Southeast Asia, China, & Australia.
In remote Australia, I lived with a nomadic indigenous tribe. On that trip, I helped to hunt, cook, butcher (and eat!) a wild desert camel, in addition to kangaroo, lizards, and other staples of the bush.
Countries I’ve Visited
Australia, Bahamas, Brazil, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Greece, India, Laos, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom
