I am a children's/YA author and workshop facilitator based in Chennai. Even though I studied to be an architect, I love creating fiction and it is when I am most proud of myself, when I write the words THE END. I have so far published more than 100 articles and 20 picture books for children. My dream is to start a writing academy in my hometown in India, and nurture aspiring writers.

A decade ago, I interned at a famous children's magazine in the US for a year, and that's when I became a traveller. I lived 2 hours away from NYC and Pittsburgh, where I discovered the magic of Greyhound - you get on one, and a short nap later, you are in a different world! I wish I had known about Couchsurfing then, but I did have good fun in youth hostels!

I eventually got tired of being broke all the time and became an editor (ah, regular monthly salary bliss!), but after a few years, I got greedy. I didn't want to edit others' work, I wanted to edit only my own. I wanted to write for myself. So I resigned, cashed in all my savings and came to London in 2008 to study creative writing and do some serious backpacking - worst time to do that, but who cares, when there are free libraries and £1 national express tickets around!

Yup, that's me, always looking for new pastures :). London is where I really became a seasoned traveller and discovered couch-surfing. The mere decision to stay in a stranger's place and to find the experience so enlightening and enjoyable has liberated me, and made me less afraid of new things. As a writer, it benefits me in so many ways, makes me approach life differently. Right now, travelling is almost as important to me as writing is!

MY PHILOSOPHY: A ship is very safe in the harbour. But that's not why it was built for!

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

I love to show people around, and always couchsurf when I travel alone. Now that I have my own place (with my parents) I look forward to hosting!

Interests

I love cats, children and spending time with the people in my life. I also love world cuisine, cross training, and my laptop. Other things I love: reading (of course!), volunteering, movies, spa therapy, juicing, flea markets, potluck, dancing, tiramisu, surprise gifts, planning future trips and sleeping late with the blinds closed.

I am very spiritual. I believe in God, because sometimes it's just the thought of a kind and omnipresent angel above us that keeps me going when I'd rather curl up and howl. I am not religious, though. I believe in Jesus and Krishna and Buddha and Allah. They are all one and the same to me. There is nothing I dislike more in the world than the attitude that says my religion is better than yours.

Put it simply, love is god. I don't really hate anything. I have practised the emotion in front of a mirror, and the way it turned my face ugly, scared me! It's such a corrosive emotion that should not be in anybody's heart... I find it hard to hate even those who hurt me. I just forgive them and move on. Life is too short and beautiful to waste in hate.

Music, Movies & Books

I read everything. I grew up on Enid Blyton, Agatha Christie, and M&B, so my favorite genres remain the same. I confess with pride that I am a slave to popular fiction. A well-written thriller by some one like Deaver or Patterson makes me give up sleep and has even known to carry me through a fever or a toothache.

Now and then I read serious/literary fiction, but I prefer a life with least amount of depression, so these days I don't read them unless they are thrust into my hand with a stellar recommendation. I love biographies and travelogues/food books, and am currently reading Gordon Ramsey's memoirs.

I am a movie fanatic (and an aspiring screenwriter), and can watch any language, any genre... I love watching movies in the cinema hall (those who watch them online are SAD!). I crave world music, and can really dance away the night if I have a worthy reason to celebrate!

One Amazing Thing I've Done

Backpacked in the eastern coast of USA using Amtrak pass - greatest memories!

Teach, Learn, Share

I am a writer, so if you fancy a discussion or even a lesson in writing, just ask me. I am an expert on budget travel and if you are planning a trip to India some time, I'd love to recommend you the places/hotels you should visit. I can also cook lunch/dinner if u like spicy Indian food!

What I Can Share With Hosts

The knowledge about the Indian culture that I belong to!

Countries I've Visited

Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Maldives, Singapore, Thailand

Countries I've Lived In

India, United Kingdom, United States
