About Me

I'm Sevi, and I study Intercultural European and American Studies and Arabic Studies in Halle, Germany.
I also work for Doctors Without Borders, I volunteer in a women's refugee shelter and as a tutor for kids from primary school all the way up to A-levels. I also currently work on an environmental education project for children.
I live in a cute little apartment right in the middle of Halle.
I love board games and have tons of them. So if you're into that, we may have a game night with a few friends!
In my free time, I sing in a choir called CantArt and explore nature with my boyfriend David.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I love the idea of being able to travel even if you don't have a lot of money, and at the same time meeting new people. That way you actually get to know the country you're visiting! I've only surfed once in France together with my Mom, and it was a pretty cool experience.
I've hosted three surfers so far, which was also loads of fun.

Interests

READING, writing, singing, cooking and baking, board games, learning languages, travelling, childhood education / Unschooling, human rights, animal rights, healthy eating, veganism (although I don't eat vegan 100% of the time - you know, baby steps), poetry slams, sustainability, stuffing chocolate in my face. I love musicals, but haven't been able to go see that many: I only saw the Dance of the Vampires, the Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked. But I'd love to expand that very short list!

I'm not a sporty person at all but I enjoy hiking in nature, and swimming/snorkeling in the ocean!

Music, Movies, and Books

Favorite authors: Joanne K. Rowling, Luca di Fulvio, Walter Moers, Terry Pratchett, Shakespeare, Mitch Albom

Favorite books: That's a hard question. I love lots of books, but my love for most of them fades as I read new books and forget about the old ones; I probably have a few alltime favorites, though. Everything by Walter Moers (he has an amazing series of novels set in a fictive world called Zamonia, it's pretty popular in Germany), The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Der Mörder weinte ("The Murderer Cried"), and the Book Thief are ones that I'll never forget, but the novels that affected my life the most really was the Harry Potter series. I'm still a huge fan, but not as hardcore as childhood-me; I used to rewrite complete chapters of the books, changing the endings or relationship dynamics between people. I even sent the Hogwarts invitation letter to myself. When I was 11 I founded a Harry Potter fanclub where the rules were so strict that I was the only member of my club, the others just weren't qualified! I'd still love to go to the Harry Potter theme park in Orlando, and one day - one day! - I WILL make that happen. Maybe with my future children.

Favorite movie: Mary and Max

Favorite TV show: I don't really have one, but I enjoyed watching Orphan Black and Breaking Bad.

Favorite musicians: Ólafur Arnalds, Daughter, Gregory Alan Isakov, Coldplay, The Cinematic Orchestra, The Head and The Heart, alt-J, Jome. My boyfriend calls it boring, I call it calming.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Volunteering for the organization "Plight of the Child International", I built a playground and a library in a little Ghanaian village called Bontodiase, where I was also part of the Love Life Project that informs about HIV/AIDS and supports patients and their families. I used this opportunity to learn a little Twi and by the end of the stay, which was for half a year, I was able to conduct negotiations in Twi! But unfortunately, I've forgotten everything by now... Would love to relearn the language!

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: I can teach you German, how to play the piano, a new recipe, tell you about our culture and customs, ... Not only the German ones, but also the Turkish ones because my Mom was born in Turkey. Oh and I know how to make your own deodorant. Sounds weird, but it actually works. If you're interested I'll teach you. :)

Learn: I'd love to learn about your culture and hear some funny anecdotes. Maybe you can teach me a yummy recipe from your home? Also, I am very passionate about learning languages, so I'd really enjoy you teaching me a little bit of yours!

Share: stories, food, towels, sheets, WiFi, basically everything in my apartment. I don't have a seperate set of keys for my apartment, unfortunately, so we'd have to coordinate a little, but I've hosted 3 people so far and it has never been a problem.

I'll gladly share with you all my food that I'm cooking. So please let me know beforehand if there's anything that you can't or won't eat.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Of course I can share stories with you, and I'd totally cook for you! I'd love making peanut butter cupcakes or a yummy Indian curry for you. I also make a pretty delicious coconut lime soup. Oh, and then there's Manti, a Turkish dish that's so simple yet so good. You might notice that making food for others is how I like to show my appreciation!
