CURRENT MISSION

I would like to get more experiences in food production and biological research (esp. plants). I am passionate about the natural world and how food systems fit into that system. I would like to continue my studies of the Spanish language, and explore some more of Central and South America. And of course, people. People and relationships are what this whole life experience is about, so I'd like to continue meeting great people and making great relationships.

ABOUT ME

I am currently serving in the agriculture sector of Peace Corps in Paraguay. My service began in late September of 2013, and I'll be here until December of 2015. As a volunteer, I am working with some women on a chicken coop project to improve their production of chickens and eggs. I am working with bees regularly, and with various farmers implementing better crop management practices, particularly through the use of green manures. I am also teaching in schools (English and natural sciences), and building biodigestors (cow poop powered methane gas stoves).

I've gotten pretty good at picking out parasitic fleas from my feet and accepting the tarantulas that find their way into my room. I've remained a pretty average cook and musician and gardener, but always trying to improve. And I'm terrible at time management; procrastination is the bane of my existence..

I like birding and beekeeping. Honey is tasty. Reading is fun, so is climbing and chess.

I used to wear a watch, but it broke and I have yet to replace it.

I like crumpling up leaves and smelling them as I walk through woods.

I really love filling out personal profiles.

I find sarcasm rather funny.

I'd like to continue studying in a university after PC. Preferably something along the lines of agroecology, ecology, or plant biology. I think I'd like to teach some day.

I now have a tiny cat as a companion in Paraguay. I've named him Magellan.

PHILOSOPHY

Be kind! Smile as often as you can, but don't fake it. Make as much art as you can, whatever the medium may be, and help others realize the artist in themselves as well. Enjoy the small things in the world, they're the most important of all.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I haven't participated much up to this point, but I'd like to change that. I would like to travel a bit around South America and would also love to have travelers come hand out in the Paraguayan campo with me. It's very beautiful, and very, very 'tranquilo'.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I once biked 300 miles from St. Louis, MO, USA, to Nashville, TN for a concert. I stayed overnight with a Couchsurfer and it was a delightful experience. He happened to be going to the same concert. He was very welcoming and kind and had a great dog. We had great food and drinks, and I had a very much needed shower. 10 outta 10.
