right now i have more time than usual: studio time, meal time, reading time, walking time, picnic time. also i like movies, tennis, duck ponds. and searching through rows of books and paintings for specialness. also these parisian baguettes called gourmandise, made with buckwheat flour. i also like the radio and my basil plant.

Music, Movies, and Books

i saw the film Black Narcissus in december, a week before christmas, and i can't think of the film for long without also thinking of the 80 year old woman i sat next to in an otherwise empty row of seats that winter evening. there are a handful of small theaters in paris that show only old films, and we were in one of them. i don't remember who stated talking first, but instead i remember her perfectly white hair, which was as simple and natural as it was done, as though it was in her genetic disposition to wake up with her hair already brushed. yes, the world was just fine within the arms of her simple and perfect hairdo. agreeing on how horribly cold it was outside made us very happy. suddenly we had more and more to say, and just as suddenly the film began, making us stop talking in order to watch it. alas, when the lights came back on, we had no more words left!
