I live and work in a small town in Central Java, Indonesia. It is an hour trip to the east by bus from Semarang (the capital of Central Java province) or four hours trip by bus from Yogyakarta.
Kudus, the town where I live, nowaday is an industrial town, notably known for its cigarette kretek factories. However, if you go deeper, you will find that Kudus is considerably unique, especially when viewed from cultural perspective. Unlike those in other regions in Java island, people in Kudus preserve its authentic islam-hindu 'cultural meeting point' legacy. Kudus played important role during 'hindu to islam' conversion in Java island. It is home of a 15th century hindu-islam architectural mosque that was built by Sunan Kudus (one of nine prominent Javanese muslim saints). A symbol of tolerance between Islam and Majapahit Hindu at that time. Its traditional buffalo meat cuisines, instead of beef, are also a legacy that muslim people respected their hindu counterpart as cow is a holy animal in Hinduism.
In the north of the town, there is mount Muria, one of the most religious mountain in the island that has a spectacular view with its waterfall, three taste water fountains, and also some beautiful summits to climb.
