Continuous non-stop learning longlife travelling living adventure experience
I'm a traveller, I need to do it to feel alive myself. I've been doing it since I was a baby, and the more i grow , the more I feel that I have to explore all the world. I love travelling cheap, and CS has shown me a path that I've been follwing ever since I joined the project. Through its network, people and amazing source of information, I've been able to communicate, help and get helped in ways that would not have been possible without CS!
Through an Erasmus exhange program, i finished my studies with a year in Innsbruck, Austria, named as the capital of yhe Alps. There I shared flats eith people, enjoyed an amazing town surrounded by 2000m high peaks, and i definietly squeezed the opportunity to learn and enjoy alpine and winter sports such as outdoor climbing, skiing, hiking, downhill biking, and just walking around the alps, a real paradise of the world.
I came back the following winter to Volunteer at the 1st Youth Winter Olympic Games, where I had an unbeliavable experience being the Sound Assistant at the Ice Skating arena!
Meanwhile, my future was tilting in between China and Germany, and destiny decided giving me the approval to take part at the Leonardo Da Vinci Program as an intern at the capital, Berlin.
In Berlin I experienced one of the biggest openings that I could find on myself. I lived with musicians, artists and amazing people, I enjoyed seasonal changes with beautifull colorful autumms, cold and challenging winters and barbacue fashioned aprings followed by blooming Berlin epic summers. By amazing coincidences (or ment to be) my home was on the always changing Kreuzberg, full of markets, rivers, parks, little personalised shops, arr galleries and an uncountable number of daily entertainments that brings continuous knowledge of a very wide range of things. It's truly hard to explain, but that allowance and freedom led me to learn more about our world today, increasing conciousness and awareness of many of the unbalance parts of our society. Besides, I decided to step away from standards and I became a freelance, being a photographer and a tour guide for about a year.
Time was off in Berlin, and I decided to apply for a Working Holiday in NZ. I flew in in 2014 with the idea of living and experiencing a life in a Van. And so it happenned, I lived and travelled north and south, I explored and wondered mountains, lakes and rivers, I sold products in markets to finance myswlf and I kept on learning about nature, awareness and conciousness about life and well being of me and others. Through experiencing NZ, I learned mre about the sense of community, the properties of land and foods, and i learned.. CIRCUS!
And CIRCUS its whats been happenning for about a year, when I decided to leave NZ saling ans I met the Alternative World Sailing Community (www.alternativesailing.org) a group of eco-concious young sailors that decided to gather boats, people and the spirit of community to fix sailing boats and bring them to the pacific Islands. And so we did! We did Circus Performances in NZ in order to finance the boat repairs and food, and after months of hard work we set sails to Fiji.
Ever since, we (Jodi and me) have been in Fiji, where we lived on an island eating local food and sharing local knowledge for about two months, and before leaving Fiji we decided to find our own adventure. We hitchiked a boat that ended up being our trip companinon for the following 7 weeks through active volcanos, incredible small and beautiful villages in remote islands and endless incredible sailing experience through Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.
We decided to leave that boat in the Solomon Islands to build up some volunteering projects here, and we ended up doing 6 different circus performances that have allowed us to travel to our next destination, China! (Through HK)
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
Note: CS doesnt match with my vision anymore. I support non profit organisations and CS is not one of them anymore. I'm paralelly active in platforms where sharing and enjoying the possibility of sharing local life while being in a foreign country does not make profit for a company.
I've considered Couchsurfing a source of knowledge, information and good people. Thanks to CS, I've been able to meet increible people, make other people have incredible experiences together, try different foods, contact common friends and host, so as be hosted.
My participation aims to share knowledge with whoever and ehatever the shape or form.. We're worldwide!
Since 2008 I've been involved in many experiences with CS, although I would not consider myself an always hosting-requester on my trips. Thanks to my trips and travels, and also CS, I've met many friends that were living where I was travelling/had friends where I could stay.
Anyway, I've been hosted in Brussels, Breda, taken for a coffee with amazing tips in Amsterdam, me and my 4 friends were also hosted in Plzen, been hosting in Innsbruck, been a guide for CS visitors in Mallorca, been to a couple of international dinners in Mallorca too, been asking/sharing information in Groups and experiences, met my climbing group in Mallorca through CS, got mechanical advice through CS, been guiding people to show "my" Berlin, found my 2nd flat in Innsbruck with Couchsurfing, got helped to recieve a parcel in NZ, met nowadays friends through offering a Spanish Tortilla - Laundry exchange in Christchurch, NZ.... There's a lot of them! And they'll be more, for sure!
My interests have expanded on a very wide range, I'll keep the old writings on this section below the update :).
Circus has became my main interest, mixing it woth the fact that travelling and street performing is possible and they fit very well together. So far, the experience has been very succesful, but we're willing to try performing in bigger and feel the experience!
Saling has shown me a path through myself that Its hard to describe with words. The ocean is big and theres no land around for a several number of days, giving you, the bat, the people who is with you and little more around to look into. I've learned how to sail, how to sail a boat and how to sail myself, learning about patience, teaching to the ones that know less and enjoying the pace and peace that the ocean provides. Calm, big and very powerful, nature is surely something to be totally respected by all of us.
The ability to look into ny innerslef, through yoga or through highlining, is just an example of a longlife learning process.
(older update below)
Still image is another one, Since of years ago, got the CANON AE-1 from my father and switched my 'lens' from digital to analog. Since then, Analog photography has been my artistic way of expression, and sometimes it can last up to 6 months to finish the 36 pictures that my films usually contain. You can see some of my works here: www.flickr.com/jorgeroda . Besides, I've got a Canon EOS 400D that I actually use for time-lapse photography and 50mm portraits (this lens is great). I combine techniques, improvise positions and like to try to get my own works from there on. I'm a fan of video edition on my own scale, videos are an interesting perspective but have to be treated good.
Besides image, I love climbing. Psicobloc (deep water solo) it's one of the crazyiest things I've ever tried, and since I've lived in Innsbruck every single mountain-related sport interests me a lot. I'm also a freeride skier, tenis player and technology fan.
- outdoor activities
- rock climbing
- study abroad
Music, Movies, and Books
I'm a soap-serie watcher. Lover of 20-min chapter before going to bed, I'm also upto 40-min ones if I don't have to wake up early! Breaking Bad, Lost, HIMYM, Big Bang Theory, Entourage, Californication, Carnivale, Black Mirror... There's plenty of them, and for me they're all great!
Movies and books are my pending on my list, I guess It's not my time yet! Movies keep away a lot of time that I could spend in something productive (mainly, my position is not extreme) and books it really need to be the time that I have time while travelling by train, or something similar!
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Sail through the Pacific Ocean on a 14 days and 14 nights journey from New Zealand to Fiji, on a community-based boat with 6 more people, boat that we repaired ourselves during months in order to have it ready!
Also experiencing the strenght of mother nature while watching the most accesible live volcano in the world at night in Tanna, Vanuatu.
Teach, Learn, Share
I can teach:
- Circus (clowning, acrobalance, stage performing, fire spinning...)
- How to hitchike a boat!
- Healthy foods, seeds, etc!
- Photography (Analog/digital)
- Photo edition (Photoshop)
- Touristic cultural awareness
- I can listen! And give advice
- Ways of cheap travelling
- Ways of cheap/free living
- Spanish/International cooking (some of them :))
What I Can Share with Hosts
Through the journey we are experiencing, Jodi & I have a wide range of knowledge that we love sharing with everyone. We spend a lot of time cooking on the boats (you do spend a lot of time cooking on the boats) and we're both quite good at it! We also love teaching circus to everyone, where simple acrobatic tricks or clowning tips are always good to share!
We like teaching slacklining, practising yoga and sharing music with people.
We just love learning and sharing whatever is in our backpack! :)
