One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
On the east coast of Australia, about 2 miles out in the sea from South West Rocks, I experienced the best scuba dive of my life. The boat stopped next to a big rock, about as high as two average buildings, and we jumped into the water. It was very cold, especially since we were about to go inside the rock, diving through the cave, where temperatures are naturally a few degrees lower than in the open water. In the cave we go, and it was pitch black, except for the flash lights we had been equipped with before we set off. Numerous people banged their heads, the passage was incredibly narrow, there were bubbles, legs, oxygen tanks, and rocks everywhere. After 10 minutes, there was a tiny ray of light visible up ahead, which became bigger and stronger the closer we got to it. Then suddenly the cave opened up out of nowhere, and a dark silhouette floated through the entrance from left to right. We couldn't quite make out what it was, but it looked big. We would find out a few seconds later when the water cleared a bit and my eyes set upon the most majestic sight in my life: outside the entrance of the cave, 40+ sharks were circling in the calm waters. There were sharks everywhere, it was mind-numbing. We slowly advanced, clinging to the walls of the cave, diving right next to the sharks, not more than 2 metres away. There we rested for a few minutes to give the sharks the time to get acquainted to the situation, what with 5 weirdly coloured people bubbling in their world. Then, slowly, one by one, we drifted into the middle of the sharks, and it was simply fantastic. They accepted the divers in their middle and started circling us with curiosity, coming ever so close, it was amazing. The memory of ten sharks simultaneously swimming around me unaggressively, all within a radius of five metres is now forever burned into my mind :)
As an explanation: We knew up front that the sharks were Grey Nurse Sharks, which, though big (up to 3 metres), are completely harmless. If you're interested, there's a pictures of me with one of them up on CS.
