Local communities around a National Park that I worked had a problem with crop-raiding elephants. The jumbos would raid their farms at night and eat everything. The communities are very poor. The crop raiding problem was a huge setback to their livelihood. I decided to help them. We experimented with different ways to protect their farms. We even used engine-oil-soaked clothing fences but it never worked. we later decided to experiment on beehives. We succeeded. Now the locals get minimal elephant raids plus they are selling honey from their bee hives. I got the funding fro bee hives from Fauna and Flora International.
