About Me

I am Fernando from Mexico. I'm a queer college student in Boston who loves to travel and connect with new people from all over the world. Since high school, I have been volunteering, studying, and working all over the place. I live for those moments in time when I get to a new place and meet new people. Immersing myself in a new culture or simply just a new lifestyle is the most rewarding experience I can of.

I was born and raised in Ciudad Guzman Jalisco, a very small town in south-west Mexico. I grew up in the middle of a valley, with the ocean an hour away from me. The outdoors and the ocean are my passion. Back in Mexico, I was sort of a math nerd (even did some competitions).

I moved to Chicago in 2016 to learned English. It was intended for a year, but I never left again. I'm now finishing college in Boston and recently gain U.S. citizenship.

My first trip outside North America was as a high school volunteer in Burkina Faso. I helped build a school in a little village while living with a local family, eating their food, trying to speak their language. That's where my love to travel , specially to new cultures, truly began. That was the best trip of my life.

My first solo trip was to Italy freshman year of college. I then discover the magic of hostels and couchsurfing.

And ever since, I have not stopped.

I travel. I life. I eat new food. Meet new people. Listen to new music, and dance. I learn about new traditions. I go on hikes, ski, surf, and even jump off climbs. I want to try everything there is.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I joined an astronomy camp when I was a teen (I told you I was a nerd). They took us to an observatory at the top of this mountain, in the middle of the dessert, in Baja California (almost an island). We were 6+ hours from any town. Closest major metro area was Tijuana.

And from there, at night, I saw the most amazing thing I have ever seen. The stars. There were millions and millions of stars in the very bridge sky in the middle of nowhere. So many stars, I could see them form a dome shaping Earth's atmosphere. But even more breathtaking, I could see star dust, making part of the Milky Way. I love this planet, but there is beauty in the sky beyond us.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach English and Spanish. I can teach you about robots and A.I. and dark matter. I can teach you math as well. I can teach you to cook chilaquiles from Mexico, or Shakshuka from Israel, or Paella from Spain. I can tell you endless stories about my experience in different parts of the world.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can share food and drinks with you, even if you are my host. I can take you out for a hike, or the beach, or even a club or bar. We can have engaging conversations about life, or not. I can complain about politics if you really want to go down that path.
