About Me

Artist, designer, letterpress printer, professor based in Detroit's Eastern Market. Proprietor of Salt & Cedar.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I have collaborators across Europe and the US, so I travel a lot. I seek creative people who are engaged in new projects and emergent practices. In becoming a part of this network, I hope to gain an understanding of the 'local scene' wherever I happen to land. Nothing beats the amenities of fine hotels, but I need to work within a modest per diem, so Couchsurfing helps me to extend my adventures. Within my studio / workshop space there's a spot for travelers to stay. I can -- in turn -- offer travelers visiting Detroit a large couch at the back of the press.

Music, Movies, and Books

I listen to a full swath of music. European and Japanese films have the greatest appeal to me currently. I immerse myself in language and collect (and produce) artist's monographs and editions. My library is extensive.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

ANthony Bourdain invited me to travel with him to demonstrate my craft: letterpress printing. [The Balvenie Rare Craft Collection, 2015]

Teach, Learn, Share

I teach all aspects of bookmaking and am connected to a network of letterpress printers, typographers, designers, writers, architects, photographers, and multidisciplinary artists. I am constantly learning new approaches to my small-scale printing business; it would be a boon to learn to print on a high-speed letterpress -- a Heidelberg. What can I share? My own living situation is within a vast commercial / wholesale market, so I can 'map' the area for those new to Detroit.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm willing to show my hosts how to bind a basic blank journal and share household tasks.
