About Me

So where am I really from?
I'm 'Taiwanese Australian' (I would never say I'm just 'Taiwanese' or 'Australian', as I am inseparably both!), having spent roughly half my life in each country. I have also lived in the US when I was young, interned in China and Thailand, and did a semester of exchange studies in Singapore.

I'm an indoorsy person at home. My time is spent on (trying to) study, reading about very random stuff (I love & loath the inventor of wiki for the indefinite and accidental consumption of my time), volunteering (I'm passionate about human rights and I have for many years taught English to refugees as well as give legal help), work (paralegal, academic tutoring & teaching piano!) and watching too many corgi dog videos.

In contrast to 'indoorsiness' during semester time, during the long university breaks I am an avid traveler - and most of my trips are done solo!
In 2017and I spent 3.5 months on Peace Boat (a Japanese NGO and not-for-profit), sailing around the world as an onboard volunteer interpreter.

I prefer to eat vegetarian food though ultimately I'm flexible, especially when I'm traveling.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The best part about solo traveling is to meet other people on the way, and what better way is there to do than to live and interact with the locals?

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: I'm a pianist trained in western classical music. I also enjoy traditional Chinese-inspired music, Disney songs and Bollywood hits!

Some of my favourite movies:
Chinese: the Once Upon a Time in China series, and a few Chinese historic court dramas
Bollywood: the 3 Idiots, My Name is Khan, 'PK'
English-language: The Phantom of the Opera (2004), some of the newer Disney ones, LotR, Titanic
Japanese: A lot of the Miyazaki Hayao films, the Detective Conan series

Favourite books:
Wuxia novels by Jin Yong, the Harry Potter series (which I have read in both Chinese and English, several times), anything on history, classical Chinese poetry

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Wait what, only one? Noooooo
Can't decide between
-Doing a 90 minute long session of on-the-spot English to Mandarin Chinese interpreting for the daughter of Australia's former prime minister, which was being broadcast live!
-Yelling at a group of more than 20 people at midnight in a Lahu village in northern Thailand for them being disrespectful to their hosts and still partying at that inhuman hours!
-Snuck out of my house while my dad was sleeping so I could go on a solo trip to India, age 19. I had a blast and that's why I've now been to India twice and have been learning Hindi for 2+ years!
-Co-funded an organisation to teach writing and English to migrant Indonesian domestic helpers working in Singapore, which ended up being featured in the Economist magazine!
-Performing piano in front of a 3000 people audience. And moved someone to tears with my music.
-Cooked a soup noodle (my favourite dish) so delicious that my guest did not say 'This is so yummy!' but 'My parents would be so proud of me if I could ever make something like this' :D
-Helped out a Chinese cop who couldn't speak a word of English and got a free ride in the cruiser to the scene of crime
-Cruise around the planet: 14 weeks, 19 countries, 23 ports!!

Teach, Learn, Share

Sometimes I have friends coming to me asking very random questions with me answering 'How on earth do you think I might know the answer to such questions!?' But apparently I have accumulated a reputation of being some kind of walking encyclopedia, so I might be able to offer my take on some issues and topics.
Particularly ones about languages, cultures, history of greater China & Indochina, world affairs, anything and everything about the two lovely countries I both call home. Wanna know why I speak 'Chinese' yet I am only learning 'Taiwanese'? Host me XD

If you want to meet up & be hosted, please mention 'rainbow unicorn' in your request so I know you've read my profile!

I'm interested to learn all you might have to teach me! Especially your language/s!

What I Can Share with Hosts

Cooking tips, a lot of travel tales, and animal noises when I'm frustrated (hopefully it won't come to that!!)
I'd love to share everything I know with you :)
