Back when I was 19 I somewhat spontaneously went to Japan for a couple of months. On my fourth day there a Japanese family invited me to go camping with them, but being the spoiled brat that I was I immediately thought of how much I hated camping and what a drag it would be. At first I told them no, but something in me (curiosity perhaps) compelled me to change my mind. I won't go into the details of how we roasted a whole pig over an open campfire or made udon noodles from scratch, since what really mattered was the 5 hours we spent waving a fan (at a fire) in order to heat a tiny stone bath. It was after everyone else went to sleep that I sat there alone, in the bath, in the dark thinking. It was so free of light pollution that I couldn't see anything but the most beautiful starry sky and I had this incredible realisation that if I'd have said no I'd miss out on this valuable experience. I decided I would say yes to everything for the rest of that trip.

That whole experience completely changed my understanding of who I wanted to be. Now, I believe I have experienced even more amazing things since then, but the interesting thing is that I might not have experience any of them if I didn't say yes to that one camping trip in Japan.
