About Me

Hi there! I’m Maria Carolina, a Brazilian passionate about learning, teaching, and exploring different cultures. I’m currently a Ph.D. student in Sociology at Universidade Federal Fluminense and doing a sandwich Ph.D. program at Università degli Studi di Salerno, in Italy. My research focuses on working conditions in the automotive sector, a topic that fascinates me for its social and economic implications.

Beyond academia, I love meeting people and hearing their stories. Traveling is one of my greatest passions, and I believe the best way to explore the world is by experiencing local life and building genuine connections. I grew up studying in public schools in Brazil, which shaped my values, like empathy and resilience, and made me deeply grateful for the opportunities I’ve had.

In my free time, I enjoy reading, cooking (especially Brazilian food), visiting museums, and spending time in nature. I’m also into learning new languages and exchanging ideas on topics like sociology and history.

I’m here on Couchsurfing to share experiences, learn from incredible people, and, of course, make friends around the world!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I love traveling solo and Couchsurfing is the perfect way for me to connect with amazing people from all over the world. It’s an opportunity to meet locals, share stories, and experience new places in a more authentic way. Plus, it helps me save a little money while traveling, so I can extend my adventures even more!

Interests

Music, Movies, and Books

I have an eclectic taste in music and enjoy a bit of everything. From classical music to popular hits, I’m always open to discovering new sounds. Lately, I’ve been diving into playlists that mix indie, Brazilian music, and some timeless classics.

When it comes to movies, they remain my greatest passion. I love the whole experience of cinema, from the storytelling to the visuals. My favorite genre is still suspense, but I enjoy everything—from the occasional romantic comedy to deeply emotional dramas that make you cry (and yes, I cry at almost all of them). My favorite director is Stanley Kubrick, and The Shining continues to hold a special place in my heart.

I also adore reading, even if I wish I had more time for it. One of my favorite books is Dracula by Bram Stoker—it’s a masterpiece that I never get tired of revisiting.

As for TV shows, I enjoy series that make you think or feel deeply, whether it’s a psychological thriller, a gripping drama, or even something lighthearted to unwind.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had was being part of a team that won the “Desafios Covid-19” challenge promoted by the National School of Public Administration (ENAP) during the pandemic. We created a simple but impactful project called HigienizAção, which aimed to bring handwashing stations to underserved communities to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Knowing our idea could make a real difference was an unforgettable feeling!

I’ve also been lucky to study abroad twice. In 2019, I spent a semester in Portugal, studying Political Science and International Relations, which gave me a fresh perspective on different cultures and ways of learning. And now, I’m in Italy, working on my Ph.D. research in Sociology, while soaking up all the pasta, sunshine, and inspiring conversations I can!

From winning a research award during college to these international adventures, I’ve learned that stepping out of my comfort zone always leads to the best stories.

Teach, Learn, Share

I’m happy to share my knowledge of Brazilian culture, whether it’s language, food, or traditions. I’d love to teach you some Portuguese, from basic phrases to casual conversations, and share some cool Brazilian recipes if you’re into cooking!

I’m always excited to learn new languages, so if you can teach me a bit of your language, I’d be super grateful! I’m looking to improve my English and Italian and would love to pick up some useful phrases or expressions.

I’m also interested in hearing about local customs, music, and ways of life—so anything you’re passionate about or want to share, I’m all ears!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I love having good conversations and learning about different cultures, so I’m always up for chatting and exchanging stories. If you’re curious about Brazilian life, food, or language, I’d be happy to share some fun facts or teach you a bit of Portuguese!

I’m also more than happy to help out with household tasks—whether it’s cooking, cleaning, or anything else that might come up. I believe in contributing to a comfortable and welcoming environment, so I’m ready to pitch in however I can.
