Overview
About Me
I'm a science writer living in rural Montana with my fiancé and black lab. I finished my doctorate in biochemistry last year and am now building my portfolio as a science writer and podcaster. I recently became the remote coordinator of a science communication program called NPR Scicommers, where I help scientists become better communicators. I have lived in four U.S. states, out of a camper, and on a goat farm. I love to find unique paths, meet interesting people, and get outside as much as possible. You can read my science stories and see pictures from my life in Montana on my website! https://kimberly-mccoy.com/
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I am going to be in D.C. this summer for a science writing internship with PBS NewsHour! I'm excited to move to the city and thought I would find creative ways to explore it by staying with locals. Once my internship is done I'm excited to use this site to travel more often and (if anyone wants to make the trek) invite people to rural Montana!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I finished my PhD in 2018. It was the hardest thing I've ever done and I almost quit a few times.
I went spelunking in a cave in South Africa which, after wading through waist deep water and following the guide for 2+ hours through tight squeezes and sloping slabs, ended in a crystal room—the entire room was literally crystalized!
I visited my then-boyfriend in Patagonia Chile while he was working as a fishing guide. I stood in one spot where I could see the ocean, the mountains, a volcano, and a glacier. This was after landing in an 8-person plane on a gravel highway that had to be shut down for landings everyday. I got to sit right behind the pilot!
Teach, Learn, Share
“The brave may not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all.”
"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all, those who live without love." -A.D.
What I Can Share with Hosts
I play guitar and write songs. I'm always looking for feedback and love when people listen or play/sing along. I also love to cook and share my meals with others. If I stay with you I will definitely make some meals and pull out the guitar if we're in the mood for music! I would also LOVE to teach you rock climbing (or go with you if you've already started). I am afraid of heights and enjoy showing people that it's still possible to climb with the fear, and how to best manage it.
