About Me

I am Alain Saasita, a Congolese national, living in Rwanda. I was born in Goma and grew up in Butembo, another city in North Kivu. I grew up in Butembo during a time marked by wars and conflicts. Many of my friends were recruited into the Maï-Maï groups, while others were killed.

At that time, my mother (who passed away in December 2024) founded a school to provide education to children who had no access to it, allowing them to study for free. Her big heart and true passion for teaching motivated her work.

After completing my studies, in 2011, I took on the responsibility of managing the École de l’Unité, a position I held until 2022. Today, I live in Gisenyi, where I am launching a tourism agency with my cousin Dominique, who lives in Burundi.

Driven by my passion for humanitarian work, I am also a member of the APIEM association (www.apiem-rdc.org), where we support children and women, particularly those who are blind or visually impaired.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I discovered Couchsurfing in 2011 through a great friend, Mr. Martin Naef, a courageous man with an incredible taste for adventure. What impressed me the most was seeing a blind person travel alone and use Couchsurfing to find friends and accommodation. This experience deeply inspired and motivated me to embark on this adventure myself.

Since then, I have hosted many people and built valuable friendships, making this journey truly unforgettable.

In January 2025, I unfortunately lost my phone, and my accounts were hacked. Now, with a new Couchsurfing account, I hope to meet even more new people. Fortunately, I have stayed in touch with most of my friends, which has helped me expand my network even further.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was a child, around the age of 6 or 7, I went to church one morning and took the Eucharist without having been baptized or received any other sacraments. My mother, who was very religious, immediately took me to the priest to "neutralize" the effects of my action.

Ironically, as I grew up, that same priest and I became very close, to the point of becoming great friends.
