COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've done a lot of couch-surfing and am always the ideal houseguest. But, sometimes you don't get the ideal house...

In all of my travels around the U.S., I have only once rented a hotel room. In cities all around the country, I have stayed with friends and family, or made new friends on the spot that have invited me into their homes. Through this, I have been exposed to a wild variety of living situations, personalities and cultures. I have also done my fair share of bumming around in college, staying on a friends couch for a month-or so at a time. When you live in this way, you suddenly find yourself completely subsurvient to the will of your hosts. Consequently, you become far more conscientious than the typical roommate: cleaning up after yourself everyday, helping your hosts out with groceries and bills, cooking meals for them, washing their laundry and cleaning house, and respecting their choices about when to have a party or to have a quiet night. You are also invited further into their personal world than you would be as a mere roommate or friend. As a couch guest, you get to see first-hand what people are really like: they share their music, their interests, their lifestyle, and their inner feelings and emotions. It's this experience of other people that I like most about couch-surfing, and the way it brings out the best in me.

As I've said, I have had a wonderful time staying with people from all around the U.S., but there are always horror stories. One house in Harlem(New York) featured drug-crazed, all-night-screaming nieghbors and fist-fights in the kitchen. Another host in Richmond, Virginia left three of us guests utterly stranded and lost in her filthy home. A house I stayed at in Los Angeles was hit by a drive-by shooting shortly after I left it. And one house in Seattle, Washington left me thoroughly bored most days as my hosts either worked multiple jobs or stayed in their rooms alone all day.

Anyway, despite these blotches, my record of couch-surfing looks quite good, and I'd love to do more of it in the future.
