About Me

I love to explore, adventure and connect with, help and learn from people and animals. I am curious, passionate, questioning and optimistic. I have been known to not comply with the rules. I doggedly follow my dreams. I believe in the goodness of the world and the goodness of others. I believe that we create our own reality and we are all connected to everyone and everything else - it is just a matter of being aware of that connection and nurturing it. I believe in changing the world by helping others, raising awareness, creating community, collaborating, innovating and taking action.

Through the US Peace Corps I lived for 2.5 years in a rural village in Ghana, West Africa, called Asiri. That experience changed the way I look at the world and influenced the course of the rest of my life. What I learned and experienced there motivated me to find a way to continue helping others through empowerment, capacity building and collaboration. When I returned to the United States I refined my ideas and buckled down, creating a nonprofit organization to continue my work in Africa and expand it to reach people and animals all over the globe. This organization, "Change the World of One," is still in the process of getting off the ground. I am putting everything I am into it everyday, as this is my life purpose.

Also, the people of Asiri bestowed upon me the great honor of making me their "Queen of Development."

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I am looking to connect with people all over the world who are intimately familiar with the cultures in which they reside so that I may learn about them, their life, the culture, and the needs and issues of that area. I would like to visit there and hopefully create sustainable, culturally responsible and effective projects starting from the grassroots level that one by one will change the world.

Helping others, changing the world.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love books like Tom does in Steinbeck's East of Eden:

"Tom got into a book, crawled and groveled between the covers, tunneled like a mole among the thoughts, and came up with the book all over his face and hands."

Some favorite books:
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
Gregory David Roberts' Shantaram
Most everything by John Steinbeck
Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged"
Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt
Cutting for Stone

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I increased the availability of clean water in an African village called Asiri by fourfold, giving the women and children of the village many extra hours of time in their days for schoolwork, housework, and relaxation.
