About Me

ABOUT ME

Four years of undergrad, done. Two years working in the corporate world, done. Three years of law school, done. Bar Exam, done. And all of that for what? Something recently hit me over the head (thank you Camino de Santiago, thank you my Cursillo sisters, thank you world of single-hood!) and Iâ

PHILOSOPHY

Embracing Simplicity.

I no longer wear a watch.

For those of you who know me well, I’ll pause and wait for you to close your mouths.

I know, it’s a big deal. A very big deal. And can you believe I haven’t looked at my planner in two whole days? Hard to believe that there were days when forgetting my planner at home was like missing an appendage. And what brought about this major (albeit gradual) change?

El Camino de Santiago.

Last May I made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, located in northwest Spain. I walked over 200 miles along the Camino de Santiago, by myself, without a fixed itinerary and with nothing more than the 12 lbs I carried in my backpack. Needless to say, it was a life changing experience.

There were a ton of lessons learned and gifts received. But the most valuable of them all - embracing simplicity.

Taken from my journal a few days after I reached Santiago:

"May 30, 2006, 6:37am, San Sebastian, Spain. As much as I’m looking forward to this time in San Seb & Pais Vasco, a part of me will miss the simplicity of just getting up, putting on the same clothes & just walking...part of me is not ready to be back in the 'real world.' The world of El Camino is so fulfilling - you have a loving, caring community...you take what comes and live with it and appreciate it."

When I finally got to Santiago after two weeks of walking, I thought my journey along the Camino had come to an end. I thought the freedom, ease, simplicity of my life ended there. But little did I know, my journey was only beginning....

After I got home, and after months of processing the power and spirit of the Camino, I realized that in fact, I had begun to integrate into my daily life the lessons I learned from my time on the Camino.

Slowly but surely, I’ve stripped myself of excess stuff. You know, the material things like bi-weekly manicures, Starbucks coffee, my watch. But I’ve also shed the intangible things - stagnant relationships, societal pressures, worldly expectations. And you know what? I feel like I’m actually living for the first time. Getting rid of all that stuff has allowed me to listen to myself, my soul, my heart. I can finally hear what my heart has been saying all along.

And it's amazing what a burning passion can do to a person. Expressing my thoughts are suddenly effortless and enriching. I've just really come to realize that when we know what is right for us, what we are passionate about...well, we just have a greater presence in this universe...and I want to share with the world this energy that's been bottled up inside for so long.

So expect plenty of more thoughts coming from my way. My time on el Camino de Santiago has ended, but the journey has only begun.
