I just moved back to Canada after four years in Australia - feeling nervous about the upcoming winter but it's worth it to be close to friends and family for a change - at least for one year...

When I travel, I surf; when I have a home, I host.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've had some super great hosts and have been really grateful for the whole experience, being welcomed into people's lives.

The surfers we've hosted have been courteous and interesting. It's a nice way to shake things up a bit, have an unexpected encounter, remember what it was like to be traveling and open to adventure.

Way too many to choose from, but my funniest movies of all time are Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, my coolest is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and my most wistful and evocative is Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amelie Poulain.

I have some consistently favourite writers, including Michael Ondaatje, Alice Munro, Jane Austen and David Sedaris, and I was an English Lit major, so I love my classics. Last year's amazing read was "The Time Traveler's Wife" (Audrey Niffenegger), this year's was "Room" (Emma Donaghue). And you know what? I like Elizabeth Gilbert and find her really companionable. No apologies. "Eat Pray Love" was so much better than I could ever have expected and "Committed" was like a really good talk with a thoughtful friend. Now I'm getting into non-fiction, as I realize how many huge gaps there are in my general knowledge and it's time to get learning!

Music is everything to me; can't even begin to narrow it down.
