About Me

Adapting to Monteiro - learning to learn again.

I am a musician and composer from Philadelphia. I play jazz and many other styles of music, and I am involved in probably too many projects in the states and now in Brazil. I studied philosophy, aesthetics, and literature, and I continue to ponder the historical nature of human practices and institutions. I am fascinated by processes, not facts. I am preparing to write a book, but I am not sure what form it will take. Traveling is fantastic. I seek people, places, and situations that are local and incomparable. When I have time, I devour books. When I talk with people, I ask lots of questions. I like art that complicates the commonplace and calls forth what is usually silent. Disorientation through absurdity is the greatest joy. I can be dark and introverted, though as I get older, I'm discovering dancing and partying more with wild abandon. I am a decent cook, but only, it seems, in Philly.

Still, there's a lot of fun to be had in the gaps between ideas.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I hosted many people in Philly, but no one has yet come to Monteiro. I have surfed a bit in Europe, and met people for drinks and such a bunch too. I have also turned a bunch of friends onto CS, I think it's 8 now.

I've had so many fantastic guests, each incredible in their own way. I've learned a lot about the world and even my own country - so many opinions about the U.S. of course. I've met great CSers in their town too, and they've all enriched my travels immensely, showing be the best out-of-the-way restaurants, nightlife, and giving me a feel about what life feels like around the world.

Music, Movies, and Books

I've been watching films from South American directors recently - excellent stuff!!!
Bach, Brahms, Shostokovich, Mahler, Osvaldo Golijov, rootsy, intense swinging jazz, and some of the new 'world jazz,' old school punk (Buzzcocks are the best), reggae (Prince Buster is #1) most of the music in the world.
Wallace Stevens, Whitman, Emerson, WC Williams, Roethke, Ashbery, Bukowski, many etceteras.
Why not paintings? Dances? Sculptures? Happenings? Installations? I like many of these too.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Let myself go.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm a musician and so know about all sorts of music. I studied literature, philosophy, and aesthetics, and still think, even write about these things. I'm fascinated by history, languages, idiosynchrasies, politics, science, and art, and am always ready to learn more.
