About Me

CURRENT MISSION

get out, think less, do more and be really cycling fit.

ABOUT ME

This is the third time I'm rewriting the 'all about you' section since joining CS some 5 odd years ago. Each time I'm shocked by the entry last left by the previous me.

So far, I can tell you, I've transformed rather regularly.

There are some things however, that have been there for the long hall:

- An interest in people; how we interact locally, globally and one-on-one: politics, power, religion, history, struggle, hardship, success, disaster, innovative solutions & disingenuous elusions.

- The Sea and the Earth: I love to hike, swim, climb, cycle, surf and explore. Alone in expanses of nature, sharing a tin of sardines with a friend atop a mountain or free-diving off the reefs of Cape Point are some of the places I'm most happy.

- Challenging myself in foreign environments. To leave my comfort zone, feel fear and be courageous enough to over come it.

PHILOSOPHY

I've not yet condensed it into a succinct quote. I try to be conscious of a few things in living my life:

Consciousness (an awareness of what's happening in the world & realities different to my own).
Avoid cynicism. Its fun but also poisonous.
Authenticity in my relationships with people. I try not to lie, even if a lie might help me avoid an awkward situation or having to say something potentially hurtful.
An appreciation for a diversity of opinions & Respect for the individual, regardless of their ideas.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've been very naughty. This used to read with some semblance of honesty: "I host when I can and give advice when i can't." I haven't done that in some time but I'm back on the program now.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've made some very close friends through CS. I was hosted by a friend and his family in Brazil in 2008. He subsequently come to South Africa to stay with my family and I and, later this year, I'm returning to join him back in Brazil. I've stayed with others and hosted too. So far (touchwood), no bad experiences.
