About Me

I'm a 33 year old looking 20 researcher in organic chemistry near Quebec City. I studied in my country of birth France and moved to Quebec for a postdoc position then stayed there for work (and girlfriend). If you wonder what organic chemists do, we basically play Lego with molecules to make new ones that could have interesting biological properties. I now live here with my gorgeous canadian girlfriend (check out her profile https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/marie-claudegagnon) since 2012 and doesn't plan to move back in France despite harsh winters.
To describe myself I would say that I'm a quite discret and calm open-minded person, who like selfmockery and avoid to take himself seriously. I'm an easy to live (trying to be) funny guy who won't look for troubles, in fact , I will try my best to not disturb anybody. I build my reasoning on a rational and scientific basis and try to be the most objective that I can. I am a very curious man, often amazed by and in awe at Nature (including the universe). Feeling very concerned by the environmental issues we encounter nowadays, I constantly try to improve my lifestyle habits to reduce consuming and waste producing. I am against violence (the real one, because I love slashing heads in video games) and all form of extremism, radicalism and obscurantism (whatever the subject).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The best mix between money saving and culture sharing. I don't want to follow ultra touristic pathways then go back to my hostel without having contact with real people. I want to soak up local culture and communicate with inhabitants is the best way to do it.

Interests

I could describe my interests as life goals:

SCIENCE: done. I'm a scientific (but I promise I'm not boring) whose dream would be to know and understand everything, especially what is very far away (universe) and what constitute thing at the smallest scale (matter). You can easily guess that I have to live with a lot of frustrations... I chose chemistry, it is the smallest scale I could understand, and I love it because I feel like I am playing with matter.

MUSIC: not done yet. I want to play drums since I am a kid. I just got a few course recently that confirmed this goal. I now have to buy the instrument and try to make some noise.

ASTRONOMY: partially done, stand-by mode. I already checked the sky with a Newton telescope when I was a teen. I still don't have my own telescope but meanwhile, laying down outside at night and watch the sky with binocular will always be a true pleasure.

MARTIAL ART: ongoing. I'm fascinated by martial art especially Karate that I practice since more than 10 years. You should think "he is kidding me, he just said he is against violence in the about me section!". Well, despite appearences, karate is a non-violence art, and I'll enjoy to explain you why when we'll meet!

ENVIRONMENT: ongoing. I just try to reduce my impact on the planet and I'm interested in everything that can help to preserve the environment, whatever the domain.

TRAVELS: ongoing. Travel through space would be the must. Since I can't, travel on earth is the best I can do! Discover new culture, food, habits etc is the best way to stay open-minded and tolerant. Having the luck to travel around the worl at least one time should be mandatory for every human.

CHEESE, BREAD and DRY SAUSAGE: done and ongoing (I'm french).

Music, Movies, and Books

If I had to choose one style I like, I'd say Hip-Hop, especially old-school US hip-hop (A Tribe Called Quest, Jurassic 5, Black Eyed Peas-their first real hip-hop albums- The Fugees...). However, I'm far from being limited to this: I love things like Simon and Garfunkel, Muse, 21 Pilots, Imagine Dragons, Queen, Arcade Fire, Pink Floyd, Chopin, Daft Punk...
I'm not a cinephile but still I enjoy wathcing movies and series. I like horror and/or mindblowing and/or martial art movies in general. Here are examples of what I loved: Old Boy, Insidious, Matrix, Into the wild, Mulholland Drive, I saw the Devil, Dexter, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Twin Peaks, REC, Paranormal Activity, American History X, 8 miles, OngBak, Kill Bill... I will also have fun watching a good bad shark movie!
Beside, I like playing video games, mostly with friends, but I won't spend all my time on it.
