Hi,

Me and my boyfriend are looking for our accommodation while we're in Jo'burg, but I was wondering which areas are safe to stay and which not. We will book an airbnb and will probably get 'home' in the evening.

I have seen that Maboneng is a really nice area, but is it also a safe?
Are there other areas that you think are safe(r)?
We really don't want to get in trouble!

I thank you in advance!

Kind regards

I will suggest Melville as well, used to stay there last year, and lots of restaurants, bars, little shopping mall around there. very relaxing place to stay ..

You can definitely try areas in between Sandton, Rosebank, Hydepark or Parkhurst, Parkview

Uber is the best option for travelling at night.

Areas to stay in - Melville, Greenside, Linden, Parkhurst, Parkview, Parktown North, Rosebank. They're all "trendy" with interesting coffee shops, restaurants, galleries (only some areas).

Enjoy my beautiful country!

Hey there!
I'm visiting Joburg 22nd to 25th. Any suggestions where to listen live jazz music? I haven't checked yet but if there is a festival or so, I'd love to attend. Looking forward to hear your suggestions.
Cheers'

Hi Prandtl,

You can also check out the African Freedom Station in Westdene, its quite a cool space to check out. Originally an art gallery and studio, but opens up doors to all art-forms. They usually have jazz on saturdays.

Thanks for suggestions, I'll be checking on them...

Hi there, I wanted to know if there are any restaurants that serve pap, samp and beans, chakalaka. Or Local beer umthomboti in JHB central area? The other day a couchsurfer was asking about that. I only know of is Kaldi's coffee in New Town, decent but a small place, though no beer.

Visit any taxi rank and you will find plenty of small restaurants selling pap, meat and salads - and for about R20 too! Park City taxi rank in central Joburg is a bustling spot with a section lined with tiny food stalls.

There are plenty in Soweto and offer tours of Soweto

Or you could go real classy and a bit pricey and get the same thing plus many more South African specialities on the buffet at Gramadoelas next to the Market Theatre

Hi Daniel

I guess road running can be done anywhere but trail running spots I know are:
- Delta Park
- Alberts Farm
- Emmarentia Dam/Johannesburg Botanical Gardens
- Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve

Cheers

Hi fellow couchsurfer,

I read about Blyde River Canyon and saw some photos from my friends. Truly interested to see how breathtaking it is with my own eyes. However, I'm not renting a car and do self-drive in South Africa. I can only rely on public transport (or minibus/minivan) to go around. Anyone can advice on any other possibility to enjoy this area? For example, any small town should be the base to explore the Blyde River Canyon region?

Thanks!! :)

The best small town in the area is Graskop. I think there are people in the area who may offer tours. Graskop is right next to God's window. It is a very beautiful area with much historical interest as well.

Bee Retief , Johannesburg, ZAF, 28 days ago

There is a 3 day hike in the Blyde River Canyon that is absolutely lovely. You hike from one (rustic) hut to hut, so you don't have to carry a tent, but you do need a backpack to carry clothes and food and cooking utensils. The hike is not overly strenuous and there are tons of places to swim along the route. It does not offer much shade though so sunscreen is essential and a thin cloth to wrap around your head and shoulders (that you can wet in the streams) is very helpful. The hike ends at the Potholes, and you can get a taxi from the potholes to the start of the hike (just not on Sundays!)

I would recommend a car because there is no public transport in the are itself.
