Wuerzburg has a history that dates all the way back to the Celtic stronghold here in 1000 BC, and history is on proud display at every turn in this city. Visitors can tour the Wuerzburg Residence, a massive baroque palace with 40 lavishly decorated rooms and a famous central staircase. Walk across the 12-century main bridge to admire the view from the river and the twelve statues of saints and emperors adorning the sides of the bridge.
Perched high on a hill above the city is the Marienberg Fortress, an imposing fortification containing a historic church and castle. From there, you can enjoy the city’s rich winemaking tradition by setting off on the Fortress Wine Trail, which snakes through the many picturesque vineyards spread over the hillsides sloping down to the Main river. A trip to Wuerzburg just wouldn’t be complete without sipping a glass of crisp Franconian wine.
