Muenster is a city that beckons people to come outside at every opportunity. It’s widely known as “the bicycle capital of Germany,” and all districts of the city are linked to the city center with marked paths and special traffic lights for the bikers. There a half a million bicycles in Muenster, and visitors can easily (and cheaply) rent themselves a bike at one of the many rental stations around the city. Pedal down to the Aasee lake, where you’ll find locals swimming, skating, biking, or just relaxing at one of the restaurants along the promenade.

Back on the streets, make your way to Prinzipalmarkt and the Old City Hall, where the 30 Years War was ended by the signing of a peace treaty, bringing about the birth of Holland. Head over to Market Square for a sampling of the region’s freshest produce, meats, and cheeses to snack on as you wander the streets. When it’s time for refreshment, visit Pinkus Müller, a historic brewery founded in 1816 and the only remaining brewery out of the 150 that once called Muenster home.
